All Carmanah products are built tough to withstand the harsh conditions of its many applications, from tower obstruction lighting to traffic crosswalk beacons and airfields to street lights. Our obstruction lighting for railyards is no exception, and we proved that in a railyard in Pennsylvania. A tractor-trailer accidentally ran over a blue safety flag, crushing the blue OL2A safety light attached to it.
In railyards, the blue safety flag and blue light are used to alert everyone in the area that workers are on, under, or between railroad equipment. Regulations state that a blue flag or blue light is displayed by day, and a blue light at night. It must be clearly distinguishable, so a dim light or a drained battery are not acceptable for compliance.
Many railyard safety crews select our blue solar OL2A lights because they offer a long battery life of 5+ years, which helps reduce battery changes. They also select it because it can withstand dust, extreme heat, water, and other environmental hazards.
Would the OL2A survive being crushed under the weight of a tractor-trailer? Robert Freshley, Assistant Manager of Operations & Maintenance at the Pennsylvania railyard, reports that only the flange mount was damaged, leaving the rest of the light completely intact. The premium grade polycarbonate body and lens were durable enough to withstand the pressure: the OL2A is MIL-STD-202G compliant for shock and vibration. This military-grade toughness is consistent across all products, regardless of application, and a feature we take pride in.
Carmanah’s Customer Support team quickly sent Freshley a replacement flange mount base.
“Thanks again for the new base, and for a product that actually lives up to its advertised capabilities,” says Freshley.
